Your name history/La storia del tuo nome
THIS IS MINE/QUESTA E' LA MIAThis is the photo that my parents saw
in a newspaper in september 17th 1970.
At that time they didn't think about having
a family, but in January 8th 1972 I was born!!
Questa è la foto che i miei genitori hanno visto
su un giornale il 17 settembre 1970.
Allora non pensavano ancora a metter su famiglia,
ma l'8 gennaio 1972 sono nata io!!

The documentary film
I'm thinking about a documentary film made of interviews at the largest number of Leila I manage to get in contact with and involve in this progect. All the interviews will be in original mother language with subtitles, and they will be weaved together with photos, images, litterature, music and all that we'll find out together linked to the name Leila.
As this is a very low budget film and also as I don't have the time to go around the world to meet Leila everywhere (even if I wuold like to do it), the protagonists can answer to a questionary shooting by themselves, whether they have a camera, if not we can do it with a web cam talking dirctly with me. I like very much the idea of hearing different voices and listen to different languages talking about and around the same topic.
If any kind of camera is avaible, I'll try with a recorded voice mached to photos.
The questionary contains questions about Leila's meaning, how and why it has been chosen, free opinions abot the name, a brief self-presentation.
There is no screenplay and there won't be a precise one, it's an open progect and all the protagonists are invited to participate actively at the structure of the documentary film with suggestions, curiosities, materials.
The low budget will be spent to pay all the material, copies, sendings necessary to realise it and, obviously, to make a copy of the result for each partecipant.
When everybody will have seen the final film, we all together decide what to do with it...

Il documentario
Penso ad un documentario fatto di interviste a quante più Leila riesco a contattare e coinvolgere. Le interviste in lingua originale sottotitolate, saranno intrecciate a fotografie, immagini, brani di letteratura, musiche e quant'altro sia in qualche modo legato al nome Leila.
Non avendo né il budget né il tempo per girare il mondo ed incontrarle di persona (anche se mi piacerebbe molto), le protagoniste risponderanno per iniziare ad una serie di domande realizzando autonomamente un video, se possiedono una videocamera; altrimenti con la web cam del loro computer parlando direttamente con me.
Mi piace molto l'idea di sentire le diverse voci e le diverse lingue che raccontano tante facce dello stesso argomento.
Nel caso, invece, non sia possibile la realizzazione di alcun tipo di video, cercherò di avere almeno una registrazione audio da accompagnare a delle fotografie.

The idea
I've always loved my name a lot. I love its sound, I like its meanings, I love it because it is sweet but short and resolute. I'm very happy that my parents have chosen it. In 1972 in Italy wasn't a widespread name at all. Nowadays it's different. When my parent decided to give me this name, they had been together for a few time. They read an article on a newspaper which was matched with a photo: a Palestinian beautiful girl holding a machine gun and the legend said simply – Leila!-. In that moment they told each other that if they have ever had a doughter they would call her Leila. It was the 17th september of 1970, I was born the 8th 1972.
Many years have passed, now it's a particular moment of my life, I got married, I have two sons, I'm still holding on in making documentary film...and...trying to understand which is my shape now and towards where shall I look to keep on walking, I've asked my self: “but who are the other Leila in the world?” That is how the idea was born: to make a research-documentary about the name Leila and about women, all around the world, who have it as a name.
I made some researches in internet and I found a list of “famous” Leila, and I try to get in contact with them. L'idea
Mi è sempre piaciuto molto il mio nome. Mi piace il suono, mi piace il suo significato, mi piace perchè è dolce ma corto e risoluto. Sono proprio contenta che i miei genitori l'abbiano scelto. Nel 1972 in Italia non era certo un nome diffuso, anzi... Ora le cose sono molto diverse. Quando i miei hanno scelto di darmi questo nome stavano insieme da poco tempo e leggendo un articolo sul giornale hanno visto una fotografia: una ragazza palestinese ( a sentir loro molto bella) con il mitra in mano e la didascalia riportava solo -Leila!- In quel momento si sono detti che se mai avessero avuto una figlia l'avrebbero chiamata Leila. Era il 17 settembre 1970, l'8 gennaio 1972 sono nata io.
Ora di anni ne sono passati, è un momento particolare della mia vita, mi sono sposata, ho due bambini 6 e 1,5 anni, sto cercando ancora di tener duro e fare la regista...e... cercando di capire un po' sia che forma ho preso negli anni sia da che parte guardare per continuare a camminare, mi sono chiesta: “ma le altre Leila nel mondo chi sono?” E così è nata l'idea di fare una ricerca-documentario sul nome e sulle donne che lo portano e che vivono un po' sparse per il mondo.
Ho fatto delle ricerche in internet e ho trovato una lista di “Leila” famose o comunque conosciute che cercherò di contattare. Ma quel che mi interessa e affascina davvero sono le piccole storie, le Leila di tutti i giorni. Scoprire quante facce può avere un bel nome come questo e scoprire se ci sono altri legami di qualsiasi tipo tra le varie donne che lo portano.
